30 Awesome Adventures On The Cheap

July 22, 2013 by The Runaway Guide 8 Comments

Awesome Adventures by Car

Car adventures are inherently more expensive than most. You need a car, insurance and fuel to name a few. But if you have the money and driving is your thing, then why not take an epic road trip? Below are 5 of the wackiest and most adventurous road trips that are sure to get your pants wet and your motor running.

Road Trip Romania

From the quaint towns of Transylvania in the Carpathian Mountains to the nude beach parties of Varma Veche, Romania is one of the most geographically stunning and entertaining countries in Europe. It is relatively cheap with food and gas prices much lower than that of say France or Italy. Romania is also home to one of the most intense and beautiful highways in the world, the Transfarsgan, making it the perfect place for F1 driver wannabe’s. For a better idea, check out this Top Gear episode.

Mongol Rally

The Mongol Rally is the world’s longest and most adventurous organized road trip. It’s a 10,000 mile journey that begins in London and ends in Mongolia. The drive is for charity and there is a chance to be sponsored. Unfortunately I recently had to back out of the rally, but there’s always next year. Check out this article for more info, The Ultimate Road Trip: The Mongol Rally.

Rickshaw Run

Like the Mongol Rally, Rickshaw Run is organized by The Adventurists. Basically you get yourself a Rickshaw and drive it through India while trying to avoid crashing into cows and getting lung cancer. It is no doubt one of the craziest road trips ever invented and I can’t wait to try it one day. To sign up, check out their website, theadventurists.com

Road Trip Across The USA

Everything about the USA seems to be built specifically for the road trip. Gas is cheap compared to the rest of the world, drive-thrus are plentiful, there are loads of weird roadside attractions, and plenty of beautiful landscapes. If you need a car, you can generally buy a semi-reliable used one for around 1000$. New York to California by the southern route is one I highly recommend. For more info on the American road trip, check out Road Trip Tips.

 Mototaxi Junket

Mototaxi Junket is for charity and also organized by The Adventurists. It is a 3500 kilometer road trip in a highly underpowered motorcycle taxi that involves riding through some of the most treacherous roads in Peru. If that doesn’t make you’re bowels churn in excitement, I don’t know what will. You can check out the full details here, Mototaxi Junket.

In terms of awesome train rides, you should try the Mauritanian Iron Ore Train…the longest train in the world and it’s FREE!

This is really a great guide. I could only hike all that if fresh juices were waiting for me every few km :D
