There are loads of hacks when it comes to traveling on a low budget. I wrote a lot about cutting costs when booking a flight and also about sleeping outside to avoid large hotel bills. Of course there are more ways to cut costs and I’ve made a list of options for you to save even more money.
1) Use a prepaid phone
If you don’t use a prepaid phone already, you should start using one! A subscription is much more expensive than using a prepaid phone when traveling abroad.
When you’re planning to stay in a country for a little while, you can buy a local SIM that has low international calling fees. You can refill your prepaid phone online when you’re in a remote place without any telephone shops around.
2) Go Where The Locals Go
When looking for a place to eat, you should always look for a place where there are a lot of locals instead of tourists. Not only are those places cheaper most of the time, they also offer much greater food because the locals know where to go.
3) Local Discount Websites
Sign up for local discount websites. There are a lot of bidding and local deal websites available in most countries, these websites can offer cheap tickets for sightseeing or maybe renting a car. There are a lot of great promotions on these kinds of sights that you would normally miss out on.
4) Do Your Homework
Touristic hotspots will be advertised most of the time and entrance fees will be expensive. This is why you should do your homework and find out if there are any hidden gems in the country you’re going to visit. These undiscovered places won’t cost you a lot of money on entrance fees. If you really do want to see one of the touristic sites, try looking for discounts on tickets online or order them ahead on a local website, it will ultimately save you money.
5) Use Public Transport
Using public transport is always cheaper than renting a car. But even when using public transport there can be a great difference in the price you pay to get to your destination. If you plan ahead you can look for day passes online or even for multiple day passes, that will probably cost less than buying a one or a two way ticket all of the time.
Of course there are a lot more hacks to cutting travel costs, but only applying these tips will already save you a lot of money.
