What Recent Runaways Had To Say…
New York – 25
“I had the best time on my tour with Leif through El Salvador and Guatemala! Leif is a laid-back, go-with-the-flow, adventurous character, and he brings those qualities to his tours. During my trip with Runaway Tours, I got to motorbike around Lake Atitlan, paraglide through the sky, dance salsa, boat to Mayan villages, enjoy amazing scenery, eat amazing food, and make amazing new friendships! Although this was a “tour”, the smaller groups and flexible itinerary made for a very easy-going experience (unlike some other large-company tours with herds of people and regimented schedules!) On top of everything i have already mentioned, the transportation between locations was organized and comfortable, and the accommodation in each places was perfect! Leif’s tours are an incredible value, and Leif himself is an incredible guide, who truly cares about who he’s traveling with! I would definitely recommend his trips to anyone looking for adventure, unforgettable experiences, and new lasting friendships!”

“I don’t consider myself very much of a ‘tour’ kind of traveller. I’ve backpacked solo around Europe and assumed that would always be my travel style. However, when I came across Runaway Tours and an epic sounding trip through Central America, I was intrigued. So I signed up and figured ‘what the hell, let’s give this a shot’. I quickly learned this wasn’t your average tour and immediately fell in love with this group of travelers that I was about to have 2 weeks of unreal adventures with. Runaway Tours is extremely chill and brought some like-minded backpackers together. There was a perfect level of organization that kept so much of our days and activities flexible and laid back but also keeping us safe and on time for the next sweaty shuttle ride to our next adventure. My mentality about tours has definitely changed and although I’ll be heading back to Europe this year on my own again, I am also joining Runaway Tours for another life changing experience as we tackle Thailand in late August. Come and join us!”

“Leif guided me and a small group on a perfect trip through Thailand and then Japan. It was the best way for me to get my first passport stamps since he knew all the tricks of the trade when it comes to traveling and had all the tough logistics all planned out. A smooth and glorious ride through unfamiliar lands with new friends to be had, new foods to eat, and new cultures to explore!”

Leif Patrick Harum aka The Runaway Guide
New York – 28 years old
I didn’t just run away to the neighbor’s house or to the next state. I ran to Europe, the Middle East and even North Africa. I did it all without a cent to my name. I was 16. Although such a trip might sound incredible to some of you, most of the time it was anything but. I went hungry for days. Slept under countless cold down pours. I fell victim to various vicious drugs. I spent weeks in solitude not talking to or seeing a single soul. Ultimately, I suffered. But through my suffering I grew. I was forced to comprehend those truths of travel, and also of life. I became grateful for my privileged upbringing. I began to see everyone as siblings, connected beings. In the end, I realized the power of travel as a medium for change, growth and happiness. In the past decade I have visited over 80 countries around the world. During this time, travel enabled me to thrive. I transformed from a beatnik backpacker able to survive on the smallest of budgets into an online entrepreneur purposefully creating the life I wanted to live. I started Runaway Tours to share my favorite places and experiences. These tours of Central America represent the culmination of all my travel experience over the past 10 years in over 80 countries. They are designed minimize costs while maximizing comfort and adventure. They’re about gaining new perspectives, discovering new life paths, forming relationships with likeminded travelers and taking time to soak it all in. To be honest, I never wanted to travel Central America. I envisioned, based on media reports, that I would probably be spending most of my time running from gangs while holding in burrito induced diarrhea under 105 degree heat. But shortly after my first trip to El Salvador back in 2013, I fell in love. I have since traveled throughout the region over the course of 4 separate trips. Hello Guatemala crew. First off, I’m am so so thrilled to join you all on this adventure. So a bit about myself?… I am from Rockland County New York, just like Leif. Ooo Piermont … a sweet place to grow up I think. I am currently in northern California, just 2 hours south of Oregon nestled in a tiny beach town next to the red wood forrest. Here, I work on veggie farms, study yoga and herbal medicine, and train as an aerial silk dancer (performer?.maybe one day)… I live a pretty simple life for the most part while i strive to learn the deeper meanings of life and happiness than what I had always been taught growing up. Ive come to find that traveling is one of the best ways for me to learn and grow as a person. I haven’t done too much exploring but the bit that I have done has been nothing sort of inspiring and deeply life altering. I’m looking forward to being immersed in a culture so different than what i am used to, to eat REAL Thai food!, to connect to Buddhist teachings more deeply, bask in the sun, and through it all have an extraordinary amount of fun. I am so grateful for you and this offering, Leif! I am thrilled to spend this time together. Meet you all soon!
Colorado – 27
Hello everyone, I’m Watson and I’m from Boulder, CO. The Harry Potter themed Meyers-Briggs personality test describes my ENTP attitude as being like Sirius Black. So I got that going for me. I’m not your typical Enginerd because I don’t identify with that super single track state of mind and lifestyle. I’m a libra and well balanced in all the interests I pursue in life. Playing music is my passion, engineering pays the bills. Research is great because being paid to learn is the best thing ever. The best advice I ever got growing up was to have moderation in all, and that includes moderation! As such, I’m REALLY FREAKIN EXCITED to go all out with you folks. Let’s get rowdy!

Guatemala epitomizes the very best of Central America. It’s got quaint colonial cities, sky scraping volcanoes, enticing surf, tasty tacos, diverse cultures, and a brilliant undercurrent of that Latin rhythm and hospitality. It is my favorite country in the world and I’m excited to explore it with you.
On this tour you’ll learn how to surf and even how to salsa if you’re interested. You’ll eat lots of fresh fruits and a whole bunch of tacos. You’ll climb a monster volcano and hang from the back of pick up trucks (optional). And since nothing on this tour is rushed, you’ll have plenty of time to admire the view.
Like all Runaway Tours, this tour is all about good times, comfort on a budget, an off the trail experience, and hanging out and traveling with a small group of like minded friends to be.
